I was watching the new docu-series "Mr. Scorsese" last night, and if you're a Scorsese or movie fan in general, you'd know that Scorsese didn't win an Oscar for Best Director until late into his career despite having this repertoire of amazing films—Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino, The Aviator—and obviously being one of the greatest directors of all time.
I kept thinking to myself that luck plays a big part of winning awards and being successful because those years there were also great films from other directors.
In one of the interviews, after finally winning an award for The Departed, Martin Scorsese said, "I just kept showing up." That phrase stuck with me. To improve your chances of winning, you just need to keep showing up.
